The Cairnsmore Messengers are a series of small paintings inspired by daily life on our farm. Each work centres on a familiar companion, encountered either in the routines of each day or as the seasons quietly shift. The animals are all held within a space that gives a quiet nod to the ever-changing Pohangina skies, early farm light, dusk air, and the stillness that settles after the day’s work is done. And each animal carries a single word I return to, again and again, as a woman living and working on the land. Grounded. Devotion. Intuition. Receptivity. Wonder. Guardian. Belonging. Solace. These words are not ideals to strive toward, but states that surface throughout the cycles and seasons of farm life – through tending, waiting, noticing, and returning. In their small scale, the paintings mirror the way much of rural life is lived; through simple daily chores, seasonal return, and small moments of stillness between tasks, between days and between seasons.
