Beth Xia is a mixed media artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. In 2017, after graduating from Falmouth University with a degree in graphic design, she moved to Aotearoa and continued growing her artistic expression. Her work navigates the enchanted and peculiar facets of life, and explores how curious meanings emerge from apparently mundane life. In this series, she invites new perspectives on the ordinary materials of the kiwi house — in this case, wood veneer and rose thorns — and recasts them as elements of a whimsical realm, where meanings were (re)formed as they are created. The delicately lined thorns punctuate a boundary, emphasising a carefree spirit within a self-contained inner universe.
Beth’s craftsmanship resonates with a quiet elegance. Her work gracefully challenges observers to reconsider the mundane, inviting viewers to rediscover how we make meanings, and appreciation for life’s subtle wonders. In Beth’s artistic narrative, simplicity becomes a vessel for reflection, inviting viewers to take care of their inner magic world.
