Description
Birgit Moffatt – small sculpture I and II (with red tetrahedron) – harakeke, cotton – apprx 250 x 150 mm $200ea
There are many ways to connect – in my work I trust my hands and my instinct making that bond.
My art is influenced by my rural life on our papakāinga, Māori art and matauranga fostered by my whānau connections.
Over the last few years I have established my art practice around the use of natural elements, often from the ngahere, which are then transformed into sculptural work in a broader sense through traditional and modern weaving techniques.
My connection and affection for te taiao is evident in my art through a muted autumnal colour palette and rich textures, that evoke a sense of grounding and serenity.
Sometimes my work is of ephemeral nature, only captured in my photographs.
As important as the finished work is the process, which includes walking in the woods, listening, photography and playful experimentation before developing a new body of work.
For ‘Form’ I have chosen (with one exception) work with harakeke, woven and strung, which I have developed over the last 18 months.
