Scandinavian Rag Rugs

Rag rugs once told a story of the culture from which they came. Even today

using modern materials, they retain a sense of connection with history and

tradition. Rag weaving is a physically and mentally demanding manual

process that remains virtually unchanged over the centuries.

Recycling is an age old theme for these rugs and many hours are spent in preparation – gathering and sorting fabrics, cutting into strips and sewing together. The rug’s design is generally formulated over previous weeks as the fabric is gathered. My designs are a

cross-over between timeless methods and modern designs and materials. The rugs are woven by hand on a free-standing wooden floor loom. There is nothing more satisfying than

creating a unique, beautiful and useful item, while at the same time keeping old skills and art-forms alive. Rag rugs are as decorative as they are functional.
