Leigh Tawharu is a contemporary mixed media artist, who moved with her family from Auckland to the hills of Kaeo, Northland in 2017. Following a lifelong fascination with fabrics, textiles, sewing and fashion, years have been filled with experimental sewing for the wearable and not so. Spending time in the Applied Arts Degree at North Tec, Whangarei, invigorated a passion for drawing and printmaking. Mixing experimental ideas of fine art, craft and sewing, with new techniques, an evolving aesthetic that is inherently informed and influenced by the fundamentals of fabric and fashion, delves into what surface texture, design, colour and construction actually represents. Leigh draws inspiration from realism’s tradition of still life, imagined and from within the immediate domestic realm and the surrounding landscape.
