Making art is about the process of discovery. Simon has always created; his work is multidisciplinary, inspired by thoughts, emotions and questions arising from day-to-day life. In recent years Simon’s work increasingly responds to the changing moods of Aotearoa’s wild West Coast. He transitions between representation and abstraction, celebrating the use of colour and the enjoyment of working with varied media. Simon wants the viewer to experience and enjoy his artwork and to share, for a short time, his experience of the world in which we live.
Keeping Watch depicts the shared experience of standing at the shoreline as the light slowly changes at the end of the day. We are invited tho keep watch with the figures in this painting, to be seated and contemplate the scene. Our focus is drawn ever backward until finally our gaze rests on the setting sun. Take a deep breath and keep watching.
