The scale of the Taranaki land scape constantly leaves me in awe. Living between the mountain and the coast the theme of this exhibition presents itself to me in everyday things. Sea and air currents bend and weave around giant stoic monoliths. These currents are imagined in the two works “Orographic lift” and “Circulation”. The style of those works reflect my earlier woodcut style and the restricted colour pallet allows the linework to speak louder than had it been a coloured work. Scale in the form of height gives way to scale in the form of width and depth providing breathing room for contemplative moments as captured in “Darling I need some time to think… I may be a while”. Here the production process required stripping away much of layers of the background, adding to, and wiping away again, leaving only what made sense, very much like the contemplative thought processes of the hero of the image, who, incidentally, will be late home for dinner.
